parkHIIT is a volunteer led community initiative, it’s about getting resistance training local to you, using our beautiful parks and city spaces. Why resistance training? It is such an important contributor to good health and wellbeing across age and social society groups and that is where community comes in, bringing these together with no barriers such as commitment, fees and that awkward feeling we all sometimes get when walking into the gym.
parkHIIT delivers on its vision through free weekly 30-minute outdoor group exercise session based on bodyweight only resistance exercises in a welcoming community-based setting, removing financial and accessibility barriers and ensuring the only resistance a participant meets is on the training ground.
'park' because it takes place in a park and 'HIIT' is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training.
parkHIIT is more than just a workout. We aim to partner with local coffee shops to provide free porridge after parkHIIT weekend workouts. The workout is the hook to get people interested. It’s the porridge, coffee and chat afterwards (the community) that encourages them to return. Promoting social connection and mental wellbeing is a key part of our vision.
parkHIIT has become a necessary part of my weekly routine. I’m so thankful for this sense of community and connection. Instead of spending cold, gloomy winter mornings under a duvet, you’ll find me in my local park. Even on difficult mornings when I don’t feel like waking up early to exercise, I’m motivated by the promise of friendly chats and coffee at the end of each workout. My favourite thing about parkHIIT is that it is so community-oriented, and the training process felt inclusive, fulfilling, and empowering. Through a series of workshops, we learned about the benefits of physical fitness and resistance exercise. Last year, I tried my first parkHIIT workout, and now, I’m insured and qualified to lead parkHIIT sessions in my local park. I feel lucky to be a part of this inaugural group of 23 parkHIIT Community Leaders offering new attendees the same friendly support and encouragement that has meant so much to me. It is such a privilege to contribute and I’m looking forward to seeing how this programme grows to include more parks around Dublin and nationwide.
