We are going to have a little get-together at the Edible Quayside gardens on Sunday 24th September.
It will be a fun event from 2pm - 4pm, all are welcome!
There will be a contest for the heaviest vegetable - it could be either a squash, courgette, pumpkin, turnip, cabbage or whatever monster veg you have! And prizes for the overall heaviest!
We will have a bit of a tidy up in the edible beds, to clear them for winter.
Please bring your gloves and hand tools if you can.

Hi GIYers!
It’s a busy time in the garden, I hope you are enjoying it. There has been a lot of rain and wind, hopefully to be followed by lots of sun - just what gardens love!
Our GIY Group usually meets in the New Ross Library at 7pm on the third Tuesday of each month except July, August and December. But in June we have garden visits instead, so we can enjoy the bright evenings and see some real gardens!
Our next meeting - the last one before our summer break for July and August - is on Tuesday 20 June 2015 at 6pm. Our Secretary, Hannelore Harms, is welcoming us to her new home and garden in New Ross. She has been working hard on her hillside garden and clearing weeds to make a new vegetable garden.
Please send me a short message if you are want to come and I will send you detailed directions on the day before (19 June).
We will have tea & coffee for everyone, but if you can bring some food and drinks for a picnic, that would be great. Hanne has a marquee , so whatever the weather, we will be there. So come along and we’ll have a great time.
Thanks to everyone who came out last Saturday 3 June to plant out vegetables in our Edible Quayside, beside the bridge in New Ross. I will send some pictures in a seperate email.

GIY NEW ROSS EDIBLE QUAYSIDE
The aim is to plant an urban garden of colourful vegetables and edible flowers and so raise awareness of our GIY group, highlight the importance of food-growing and gardening in the South East of Ireland, and brighten up our town as part of the New Ross Tidy Towns scheme. This is the fourth year our group has done this.
Ten people have signed up to grow some plants from seed, maintain the display on a rota, and continue raising plants throughout the summer.
Below is the suggested rota for maintaining the beds.

Biodiversity: Support Your Pollinators!
by Dr Úna FitzPatrick, Project co-ordinator of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, National Biodiversity Data Centre, Waterford.
One third of our 98 bee species are threatened with extinction from Ireland. Most people appreciate the beauty wildflowers bring to our landscape, they want the option to grow their own fruits and vegetables, and they want to buy affordable Irish apples or strawberries in our shops. This can only happen in a landscape that supports pollinators and provides them with nesting areas and a diverse diet from spring to autumn. Hear about Ireland’s wild bee species, the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020 and how you can help by making your own garden or allotment pollinator friendly.
SEED & SEEDLINGS SWOP
If you have an abundance of seeds and seedlings left over from sowing, please bring them to the meeting, clearly labelled, and in easily divided pots or modules. And remember to bring along a box or bags yourself to take away your goodies!
JUNE MEETING
Hoping that the good weather holds up for June, we are going outside for a garden visit for our June meeting. Please tell me if you (or someone else you know) would welcome a small group of visitors to your garden, who can also give you a hand making new vegetable beds, compost bins etc.

I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting, when Mary Meyler, of Ocean Leaves, K + M Aquatic Plant Enterprises Ltd, Thornville, Killinick, Co. Wexford, will give a talk on
"The Magic Benefits of Ocean Leaves”. Mary will speak about seaweed and its benefits to soil and plants. We will also have lots of GIY news and our usual list of monthly garden jobs to do.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN ATTEND, SO I HAVE NUMBERS, AND BRING SOME CASH IF YOU WANT TO BUY ANY OF THE OCEAN LEAVES SEAWEED PRODUCTS AT THE MEETING.
Master Composters Course Outline
Outline: In collaboration with Stop Food Waste (EPA), Waterford Co Co. Environment Office and GIY/GROW HQ, it is proposed to run 5 sessions as part of a Master Composter Training Programme. Four sessions would be classroom/theory based, 1 session will be the practical building of the compost area. At the end of the training, the participants will be master composters with the ability to train other people in composting skills and GROW HQ will have a fully set up and functioning compost area, including a wormery, 3 bay composter, leaf mould and other demo composters, such as a traditional plastic green compost bin and a green cone digester.
Cost: free
Timeframe:
5 sessions. Once a week over 5 weeks – timeframe to be decided - flexible
4 x 3 hr sessions – theory/classroom
1 x 3hr session – practical – building compost demo site – 3 bay composter, wormery etc. (would have to be daytime session for daylight – possibly a weekend).
