Generation Citizen works to ensure that every student receives an effective civics education, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in our democracy as active citizens. Generation Citizen’s action civics curriculum is the crux of our work and underpins both our Democracy Coach-led and teacher-led models. The curriculum is action-based, aligned to relevant standards, and academically rigorous.
The core program partners college volunteers, called Democracy Coaches, with high school teachers to lead an action civics curriculum in which students identify a pressing local issue (e.g. public transport, mental health, community gang culture) and learn to make their voices heard by developing and executing an action plan to address it. Generation Citizen aims to revitalize our democracy by changing how civics is taught, encouraging a diverse set of young people to make their voices heard, and reframe our society’s perception of the political process – motivating and enabling young people to become life-long engaged citizens, capable of leading change on important issues and ensuring that government is responsive to the needs of all citizens.
You can get involved, either as a teacher or as a college student. Just fill in this short form to get started.
"GC has shown me that youth civic engagement is vital to our nation’s progress. My small group of twenty students is already working toward change in their school of over 700. Our youth want to impact the world, and it is up to us, as volunteers, educators, parents, and community partners, to help them reach that goal."
