The Change X funding has been very helpful in making this event a round success! It was very helpful to have funding to commute to the in-person meetings, and to bring some advertising and identification materials for the day of the event - this was about 27% of the expense, as well as for communication. The greatest expense came with food for the participants of the event, which came up to 45% of the expense fund. With these it was possible to have more people know about the event, to make it a bit more formal and credible. The food allowed people to be in the place without having to leave the school campus and they enjoyed the food. There were more than 50 people who ended up without food because both rounds of food serving were quickly finished! The students were the ones who seemed to enjoy the food the most. For a future event, we would need to order more food!
This was a wonderful event. The young people mostly showed interest in the challenges involving knowledge trivia (this was their favorite and the one that required the most creativity and imaginative play), and the food challenge, where they had to share a traditional local dish from their family, they also showed lots of interest in the sports game and the mural. They were excited to plant trees and have the memory of that for the future.
The mural, the sport, the environmental, and the peace influencer challenge required the most collaboration among tribes. It also required them to connect with the students who attended the school in the afternoon, with whom they usually don’t have contact. The cooperative interaction allowed them to meet new people they didn’t know before and think and problem-solve together. In this way, they were able to use more collaborative skills when sharing multiple ideas and teamwork. In the feedback, they mentioned how this event allowed them to experience interesting challenges and move out of their comfort zone with creativity to find solutions. They mentioned they had fun and felt supported, encouraged, and inspired because they were able to make a change. They learned that people working together were capable of much more than individuals on their own.
They highly enjoyed having their families involved and other friends and connections from the community. They felt connected and, despite a few interactions they say were not helpful because some students focused on the competition part and ended up making tricks to be able to win, they were able to learn from this experience and felt that most of the activity was positive. The closing event with the Talent Show was emotive and allowed them to enjoy themselves, and support each other when they were hesitant to go up on the stage, and they felt together. These were beautiful moments to witness as well!
We believe that every one of these is a skill needed for the time we are living in, in which young people can be able to take healthy risks meet new people, gather and find solutions to current problems, and make a change in their community. They felt highly engaged through play activities and this allowed them to have fun and enjoy themselves and their friends, classmates, and teachers.
