#JomRepair

Train community repair leaders and run hands‑on repair workshops that help people fix small electronic appliances, reduce e‑waste, and build local repair skills.

#JomRepair is a community programme created by Zero Waste Malaysia, one of the country’s largest environmental communities with over 50,000 members.

Malaysia generated approximately 365 kilotonnes of electronic waste in 2021—around 11 kg per person—exceeding the Southeast Asian average. Much of this waste ends up in landfill or is improperly handled, creating environmental and health risks.

Repairing appliances extends their lifespan and keeps valuable materials such as copper and aluminium in circulation. Manufacturing new appliances also has a large carbon footprint; repairing instead of replacing can reduce emissions by up to 50–75% for many household devices.

The programme builds a repair ecosystem through a growth pathway: participants begin as Repair Cadets, progress to Repair Specialists after facilitating multiple workshops, and can eventually become Repair Masters who train others.

Community workshops typically run in small groups to maximise hands‑on learning. Over time, communities can expand the programme with initiatives such as tool libraries, repair clinics, or tool‑sharing systems.
