TREES OF LIFE

Open Orchard connects communities through planting fruit trees in public spaces, creating shared resources that provide free fruit to local residents whilst greening urban environments.

This initiative addresses the need for stronger community bonds and local food access in urban areas. It's designed for community groups, environmental enthusiasts, and neighbours who want to create positive change together. The project involves coordinating with local councils, selecting appropriate fruit trees, organising community planting days, and establishing ongoing care systems.

Communities benefit from increased social connections, improved local food security, enhanced green spaces, and environmental improvements including carbon absorption and pollination support. The trees create a lasting legacy that continues benefiting the area for 20-30 years, even as residents change.

Participants receive comprehensive support including starter guides, meeting agendas, organising calendars, and expert advice on tree selection and planting techniques. The project builds sustainable community stewardship whilst creating tangible environmental and social impact.

Trees of life desires to integrate health, healing, fresh organic free fruit and beauty with the restorative justice of planting trees. We plan to plant cherry, apple, fig, lemon and peach trees both indoor and outdoors to cultivate a culture of fresh fruit from trees planted by local residents, toddlers and elders to build intergenerational exchanges that will last a lifetime.

Dig Day will begin May 14, 2022 and we will plant our first trees as a local event to build community relationships and engagement. We will have a training session to properly teach those participating how each tree should be planted and cared for.

We will serve nutritious snacks and talk about what trees will grow best in Chicago's
