Food waste is the largest category of material in municipal landfills, where it creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By composting our food waste we can greatly reduce the amounts of methane produced. In addition, the compost produced can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and produce higher-yielding crops. 

These benefits are why I believe that composting would be a perfect add-on within the Come-Unity Joy Garden. Gardens provide a perfect space for neighbors of the Garden to dispose of their food waste properly, and while they're there, why not pick a few items from the gardens as needed.
