Community Roots are looking to expand their multi-award-winning garden-share scheme 'Soil Mates'. As the coordinator, you'll become the vital link connecting neighbours who have gardens with those who want to grow food but lack space, creating at least five successful pairings in your area.
Our concept addresses social isolation and underused spaces whilst building climate-resilient, thriving and connected communities. It's designed for community-minded individuals with an interest in food growing, experience facilitating small groups, and an outgoing personality who wants to make meaningful connections happen in their neighbourhood.
As coordinator, you'll receive a comprehensive support package including training and induction to the organisation. A raised bed, composting, seed packs and online GIY 'how to grow' course will be provided for each pairing. Ongoing mentorship from Community Roots founders, access to the national network and WhatsApp support groups, promotional materials and guidelines, and public liability insurance coverage will also be provided. You'll work closely with the established Community Roots team who have successfully made pairings across Dublin since 2022.
Your role involves making matches, attending pairing meetings to introduce garden owners and budding growers, facilitating monthly workshops (usually one Saturday per month) and curating the whatsapp group with tips and advice. The time commitment averages two hours weekly, with higher involvement during the six-week setup phase from early March to mid-April when pairings are being established.
Community benefits include reduced food waste, enhanced health through outdoor activity, stronger neighbourhood bonds, fresh local produce, practical food-growing skills, and meaningful intergenerational exchanges. You'll receive your own growing space as part of the benefits.
