Imagine creating an environment and a moment where action and dream meet to play? By making your own Play(Action) Box to take to a favorite square or open area, the possibilities of collecting, stacking, and coloring the space with objects will be endless. Making a Play Action Box is like setting up a meeting place and experiences for diverse children, bringing together play, doing, dialogue, and perception. We want to encourage creativity and try new games, so let's play?

The Play Action Box is a toolkit that encompasses various elements of light, sound, wind, earth, bridge, time, and stories. Through a creative and playful approach, the Play Action Box mobilizes diverse elements, creating compositions that are activated through play and people's participation. The purpose of the “Box” is to provide children with objects that stimulate sensory play, as a way to explore the possibilities of creating play spaces in the city.
Play Action Box encourages a playful perspective towards various elements, expanding our understanding of what is considered playful, by combining traditional toys with unconventional materials chosen from those available in the community.
The Play Action Box was created based on 7 categories: Bridge, Light, Wind, Earth, Sound, Time, and Stories, considering elements that appeal to and invite different age groups while stimulating all sensory aspects. These categories were discussed over months by an interdisciplinary group of designers, architects, and educators from the The City Needs You Institute, with a focus on activating spaces, people, and dialogues, building alternative forms of relationships and affection. The toolkit was utilized in 6 different public spaces in São Paulo, Brazil.
The most incredible thing about thePlay Action Box is how it reaffirms that the city is a space to play and a space for and of children. It is an invitation to inhabit the spaces of the city from a different perspective: more playful, more welcoming, more sensitive. To look at the city from its potentials and possibilities, and not from its weaknesses and deficiencies. A way to rediscover the spaces and bring them to life. The Play Action Box transforms the use of the city by playing, and there is nothing more powerful than this!
