The Idea
Firstly, the world of remote work can seem fragmented. As community developers, we felt there was no place for us to go to get all of the information in one place. We started to crowdsource everything from the jobs boards to the companies who employ remotely, and make this information available free of charge.
As we went on, we found that there was a huge need to connect remote workers locally and so we started to see local community leaders facilitating weekly and monthly meetups that provided space for connection locally.
The aim of Grow Remote is to enable us to work, live, and participate locally. We do this by making remote work (employment) both visible and accessible.
The Meitheal is at the core of us. The Meitheal is a tradition from old rural Ireland where a community would come together in a time of need. Grow Remote was built by many people who donated their time, skills, or even encouragement to the mission.
We grew from a volunteer group to a government funded award winning non-profit.
We are experts in building local communities. We have monthly sessions and updates for local community leaders, and share knowledge around best practice.
Local communities usually have one of three goals - (1) get local people employed, (2) foster local communities of remote workers, or (3) attract remote workers to their area.
The route to achieve each goal is slightly different, but it generally involves meetups or events of some kind.
You do not have to become a part of Grow Remote to take our learnings as we make them public. If you do decide to set up a Grow Remote ‘chapter’, you’ll benefit from a central team and a community of other community leaders.
We are all about offline, and together we aim to make remote work local.
