Community Fridges transform food waste into community connection by providing accessible spaces where surplus food is freely shared rather than thrown away.

These communal refrigerators address the dual challenges of food waste and social isolation. Local businesses, cafés, and residents donate surplus food that remains fresh and edible, making it available to anyone in the community who needs it. The initiative operates on trust and mutual respect, welcoming all community members regardless of their circumstances.

Setting up a Community Fridge involves partnering with a registered organisation for insurance purposes, securing a suitable covered location with high footfall, and building relationships with local food donors. You'll recruit volunteers to manage daily operations including food collection, fridge monitoring, and community outreach.

The project creates lasting environmental and social benefits. Each fridge typically redistributes 4 tonnes of food monthly, preventing significant CO2 emissions whilst providing fresh, nutritious food to community members. Beyond waste reduction, these spaces become hubs for community activities, recipe sharing, and neighbourhood connections, fostering stronger local relationships through the universal experience of sharing food.

Hello to All; Community Fridge Halifax has been on the Move with FOOD Distribution during the past several weeks.

The summer in Southern Virginia has certainly provided an abundance of fresh produce including veggies and fruits. But what's more impressive is the community expressions of sharing. We are receiving daily supplies of tomatoes, string beans, squash and other fresh foods directly from the local gardens. Our volunteers are making deliveries to those that are unable to do pickups.
We are truly blessed with local vendors, volunteers and a community of people working together for a common cause: Feeding the elderly and disabled.

During February,2020 I was introduced to ChangeX funding source for community projects. As a retired social worker, I was always researching or assessing the needs of elderly, disabled and unfortunate members in our communities. I recognized the need in my community for improving healthy eating habits among the many physically disabled persons. Unfortunately, our community is located in a local food desert. Community residents have limited access to fresh fruits and produce.
ChangeX funding provided an opportunity for local volunteers to help with purchasing fresh fruits and produce from local markets and vendors. These food items were delivered to approximately 33 homes on a weekly basis. A total of $3,500 was used to travel around the local communities to purchase food and make home deliveries during the hardest point of the COVID-19 pandemic. many familes did not have access to transportation or ways to provide for self-protection during the pandemic.
many families relied on our volunteers to bring fresh milk, fruit and produce weekly to their doorstep. Funding was limited as our volunteers attempted to keep things going using our own monies.
However, the volunteers will always be thankful to ChangeX for funding that changed lives during the difficult times of COVID 19.

Hello to all:
Week III Update:
We are actively working with all the families that have been identified as those in need. The group agreed to switch delivery dates to the elderly-non driving consumers from Tuesday to early Saturday mornings. This seems to be working much better. We continue to limit deliveries to four families weekly due to volume. Cost is about $70.00 per week.
Overall, things are going very well. Will post photos in the next week.
