School gardens create powerful outdoor classrooms that bring learning to life through hands-on experiences with plants, soil, and seasonal cycles.

This initiative addresses the growing need for experiential education that connects children to their food sources and natural environment. It's designed for teachers, parents, and community members who want to enhance student learning while promoting healthy eating habits and environmental awareness.

The project involves forming a garden committee, selecting an appropriate site, designing garden beds, and establishing maintenance routines. Students participate in planting, tending, and harvesting crops while learning science, maths, and life skills through practical application.

Your school garden will strengthen community bonds, improve student diets, provide therapeutic outdoor space, and create lasting educational impact. The initiative includes comprehensive planning guides, design templates, material lists, and ongoing support to ensure your garden thrives year after year.

This was our opening day party, unfortunately, we didn't get footage of all the work and fun that happened in the garden that day. The children did enjoy the day and learned a lot. we wanted to make sure there were other fun things to enjoy outside so we got a bounce house. they LOVED it!!!!!!

How it started...we sheet mulched all the paths. This is the entrance of our garden we did a blessing and placed rose petals in our path to bless our way.

We've put our garden to bed for the winter, planting cover crops. However we do still have some plants still thriving like, cherry tomato, comfrey, calendula, African basil, goldenseal, thyme, nasturtium, and lemon balm.

All the trees we planted have been properly mulched to protect them from cooler temperatures. We have planted 3 pawpaw trees, 2 persimmon, 2 figs, 3 blueberry, 2 blackberry, and a muscadine.

We also planted onions and garlic that are still growing happily.

Action plan:

Timeline: When will you be able to start your project? How often will your team meet? Are there any key dates to share for the project?

Our project will start July 7, 2023. We are planning workdays, weekly. After the garden is established the garden will be used daily as our curriculum is built around nature and agriculture. Our school session starts August 1, 2023.

Budget: You don't need to share exact prices, but please share how you're planning to spend the seed funding & what costs you're anticipating to get your project up and running:

We will use the seed funding to acquire soil, truck rental for transporting materials,  mulch, seeds, plants, amendments, garden tools, wood for raised bed.

Impact: How will your community benefit from this project? Do you have any measurable goals for your project, such as the number of people that will participate? Are you hoping to spread knowledge or increase interest in a specific subject?

We believe being in nature provides us so many benefits, we can learn so much from it, food, exercise and fresh air. Our goals are getting the garden built, up and running. Learning everyday from the lessons that nature teaches us; whether it's measuring plant growth, tracking the amount of new insects, bird, and other new visitors that change over the course of the gardens life. We are expecting about 10 families to participate and between 3-15 children in the space on any given day. We hope this garden increases our awareness of nature, seasonal local foods that we can grow, seeds saving, and food preservation.

Location: If your project requires physical space, have you decided the location?

Do you have all necessary permission and permits to carry out your project at the chosen location? Yes, we do have a site for our garden. All permissions have been granted for allowed use of the space we will be using for the garden.

  • How has your kid leader been involved in the planning of the project so far?

Our child leaders have already started designing the garden plan.

  • How will kids be involved in the design and activation of this community project? The children will help design and build the garden.

They will also help with planting and seed starting. We are also hoping to have them come up with events they can hold in the garden space.
