“Was it for this the Wild Geese spread the grey wing on every tide?”
Welcome to the Grow Remote and the Wild Geese chapter! This group was set up on November 4, 2018 and is run by volunteers and mystic gladiators . We are keen to build a thriving community of remote workers in and around Lough Derg. Our HQ is based in Portumna, Co. Galway. However, our community has no boundaries, borders or frontiers.
Not everyone leaves or should feel the need to leave their home to find an opportunity to work. Lough Derg and environs is a treasure chest of highly skilled and educated people working or not working. The aim of this group is not only to raise awareness of the opportunities of working remotely but to build a community where you can work remotely together and look for support on your journey.
According to this Remote How Survey, 62% of people don’t work remotely because they don’t know where to start. We want to change that for our 200,000+ remote workers and those who would like to convert to remote working.
Who is the Wild Geese for?
Regardless of your industry, background or whether you're working remotely full time, we are keen to have you on board. This is an opportunity for:
Remote Workers
Traditional Workers who would like to try out Remote Work
Our Diaspora - who are looking for an opportunity to return home
Parents of our Diaspora who would like to learn more!
The Curious - those of you who have not heard about remote work
The Homemakers - those of you who paused your working life to nurture our young geese
Become one of Wild Geese first members and be the first to share in its vision, and support the work of its volunteers.
Grow Remote hope to reinvent how people work, share knowledge, tell stories, and inspire more people to experience this way of life.
A note from the founder of Grow Remote
Welcome to Grow Remote on ChangeX! We're building a national movement to connect remote workers in Ireland. We believe we’re in the middle of a seismic change in ways of working that opens up a whole new opportunity for a better quality of life, for remote workers and for rural Ireland. We'll help you do this in your local community by starting a Grow Remote Chapter.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Eamon Kennedy and I'm from Co. Tipperary, I am currently writing my master thesis at Radboud University in the Netherlands. I’m writing it on how trust, communication and control affected the performance of remote workers in Ireland during the Covid-19 pandemic. To complete this thesis, I need to conduct interviews with different people who worked remotely during the pandemic. I am therefore wondering if any of you would be available around the end of May for about a 30/35 minute interview via Skype or by phone.
Seeing as I am based in the Netherlands it is difficult to find people working in Ireland to interview so it would be greatly greatly appreciated. My email is [email protected] and my mobile is +353872437033 if you wish to get in touch. otherwise if you know anyone that would be able to help me please let me know (whether it is an individual or an organisation).
Thanks a mill in advance!
Eamon
Hello everyone, I will be moving to Rathcabbin from Liverpool on the next month or so and will need a place to work remotely from whilst I arrange wifi set up at home. Can you please recommend any remote working hubs for short term use?
Hello Elodie, I will need a remote working space short term - just as long as it takes to get a wifi connection in my new house.
Hello Nichola and welcome to the Grow Remote. I will share with you resources in my next post. Can you let me now how long you will need the remote working space?
Hi everyone and happy new year! My name is Jonathan Madden. I am creating Loughrea's first remote working hub, which we aim to have open this summer.
This will be a high quality professional and exciting space for our remote working community. We have an amazing building, many of you will know it as the "old corrys unit". It is 7000 sq ft, lots of floor to ceiling glass and I know we can make this one of the finest hubs in the whole country. If you are interested in working from here please please please complete the survey at comworks.ie/survey
Like most of you, I have been a remote worker for many years. It's been amazing and freeing but it's also been tough and lonely at times. I travelled to Galway from Tynagh twice a week, just to use The Portershed hub because after a decade of remote work I really just missed people but the commute was just too much in the end.
I never thought it would be possible to build a hub in rural Galway but the pandemic and widespread adoption of remote work has now given us an amazing opportunity to rebuild our lives to suit us better. We now have the large numbers of remote workers we need to build an amazing workspace in Loughrea and with a little help from all of you I know we can create a really special place.
If you would like to get involved, have any thoughts or questions please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks everyone and all the best. Jonathan
Depending on what side of Portumna you are on I understand Loughrea may not suit you so please support your local hubs Ballinasloe Gort and Killimor. Thanks
Living near Killimor and working from home ? Need a place to work from ... check out the newly created Community Hub, what a superb achievement by the locality and all involved:
