Cosy Kindergartens

Transform underground shelters into magical, child-friendly spaces that reduce trauma and create psychological safety for children during wartime emergencies.

This initiative emerged from real experiences of Ukrainian kindergartens adapting to wartime conditions. Tetyana Morozenko, director of "Kozachok" kindergarten, observed remarkable changes in children's behaviour after shelter transformation. Instead of fear, children showed excitement and curiosity about their colourful underground space.

The project draws from community guides and video tutorials created by Ukrainian educators sharing practical solutions. Additional resources include regional implementation examples and detailed transformation guides.

The approach emphasises using affordable, locally-sourced materials and community donations. Simple techniques like sponge stamping, rainbow painting with rollers, and strategic placement of soft furnishings create dramatic improvements. The initiative proves that with creativity and community effort, even the most challenging spaces can become sources of comfort and joy for children facing difficult circumstances.

Temps: Transforming your shelter can take as short or as long as you would like it to. We'd suggest setting aside two weekends. Using the first weekend to plan out the transformation and sourcing materials, and the second weekend to implement your vision. That way you also wouldn't disrupt children who might use the space during the week.
