TOM (Tikkun Olam Makers) is a global movement that enables communities to create affordable, open-source assistive technologies with and for people who face daily challenges. It connects “makers” — engineers, designers, students, and tinkerers — with “need-knowers,” individuals who understand these challenges firsthand, to co-design and build practical solutions that improve quality of life.
Participants identify unmet needs, collaborate on inclusive design, prototype low-cost devices, and openly share their outcomes so others can replicate and adapt them. Each project builds empathy, technical skills, and social impact while strengthening community ties.
Since 2014, TOM has grown to more than 200 communities across 34 countries, developing over 1,200 solutions that are freely available online for anyone to use, improve, and reproduce.
By joining TOM through ChangeX, local teams receive guidance, resources, and access to a global network of innovators committed to “repairing the world” — the meaning of Tikkun Olam. Together, they create tangible, sustainable change through human-centered design, frugal innovation, and collaboration that empowers people of all abilities.
