Trees 4 All

Trees 4 All

A nature-based solutions programme supporting smallholder farmers to restore degraded ecosystem by integrating tree planting, and biodiversity-enhancing practices, with all trees digitally tracked over time through an innovative monitoring system.

This trackable tree-planting initiative is led by RECOFTC Thailand country office. RECOFTC is a regional leader in community forestry supporting local communities to sustainably manage forest resources through capacity building, research, and policy engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. RECOFTC has nearly four decades of experience working with farming communities on sustainable land management. Trees4All programme was in the watershed areas of Nan province in February 2022 with support from crowdsourcing. It has successfully mobilized funding from individuals and the private sector to the participating farmers for forest landscape restoration and income diversification in Nan province.

Trees4All emerged from Thailand’s urgent need: millions of hectares of forest areas have been converted to agricultural land, primarily through monoculture. This has led to environmental degradation and natural disasters including flash floods, landslides, prolonged droughts, and declining ecosystem services for communities from upstream to downstream. Climate change is intensifying these challenges, making forest landscape restoration critical for survival of forest dependent communities. However, successful restoration also requires diversification of native tree species to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, and after plantation care and monitoring, while providing financial incentives for farmers.

As of March 2026, 291 farmers have planted over 40,000 individually tracked trees of 44 species in Nan province, nurturing and reporting their progress on trees4allthailand.org. By adapting the Trees4All model for other provinces in Thailand through this training, impacts will become measurable and more farmers will be empowered as environmental stewards, while earning additional income from tree growing.

Success is evaluated through enrolment and completion of farmer training, number of trees planted, survived and tracked on the trees4allthailand.org platform (target: 1,000 trees per cohort), improved soil quality measured through field assessments, enhanced on-farm biodiversity including native tree species, and strengthened farmer skills in monitoring techniques. The programme will also develop tree nurseries run by farmers themselves, creating sustainable seedling sources for long-term landscape restoration.
