Community Biodigesters

Community Biodigesters

Transform your community's daily food scraps into clean biogas for cooking whilst reducing methane emissions and creating valuable fertilizer for local gardens.

Biodigesters operate through anaerobic digestion, where bacteria break down organic matter without oxygen to produce methane-rich biogas. This ancient process, now refined with modern engineering, prevents approximately 20-25 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually per installation.

The technology requires 50-70 square metres of levelled ground with good drainage, close proximity to kitchens for gas piping, and access to water and electricity. Each project follows a structured 7-month timeline: site survey and permissions (weeks 1-2), plant installation (weeks 3-6), commissioning and training (week 7), followed by 5 months of monitoring and performance audits.

Nirmaan provides comprehensive support including volunteer mobilization, technical training, and donor reporting. The project diverts 25-30 tonnes of organic waste from landfills annually whilst sensitizing over 500 community members to renewable energy principles. This pilot project model is designed for replication across India, creating a network of community-based renewable energy solutions.
