On a global scale it is estimated that approximately 30% of food produced for human consumption is wasted. In Ireland, we generate approximately one million tonnes of food waste annually while one in eight Irish people are living in food poverty. This is perfectly good food that, as a consequence of the modern food system, does not reach consumers and invariably ends as waste. Within communities across Ireland food businesses frequently experience food surpluses while charities struggle to provide food for those who need it most. FoodCloud connects businesses that have too much food to charities in their communities that have too little. Using our technology platform businesses can post a description of their surplus food, which is sent as a text message to a charity. The charity can then respond to the text to accept the donation, and then collect the food from the store.
In FoodCloud's experience, charities often struggle with having sufficient resources to take advantage of the amount of surplus food available. This means that sometimes food is going to waste because charities aren't always in a position to go and collect it. This is where teams of Food Rescuers come in, they're teams of committed volunteers who dedicate a small amount of time every month to help the charity collect the food from the retailer and bring it to the charity that needs it.
"We’re well and truly delighted to be a part of the service. We get great quality, wholesome food. It's great to see the nutritional produce and fresh meats being used by people who really need it, rather than go to waste. It's a heartwarming experience all-round!" SVP Kildare
