Community Fridges transform food waste into community connection by providing accessible spaces where surplus food is freely shared rather than thrown away.

These communal refrigerators address the dual challenges of food waste and social isolation. Local businesses, cafés, and residents donate surplus food that remains fresh and edible, making it available to anyone in the community who needs it. The initiative operates on trust and mutual respect, welcoming all community members regardless of their circumstances.

Setting up a Community Fridge involves partnering with a registered organisation for insurance purposes, securing a suitable covered location with high footfall, and building relationships with local food donors. You'll recruit volunteers to manage daily operations including food collection, fridge monitoring, and community outreach.

The project creates lasting environmental and social benefits. Each fridge typically redistributes 4 tonnes of food monthly, preventing significant CO2 emissions whilst providing fresh, nutritious food to community members. Beyond waste reduction, these spaces become hubs for community activities, recipe sharing, and neighbourhood connections, fostering stronger local relationships through the universal experience of sharing food.

EXCITED: We are finally up and running with our Halifax County food distribution program. We delivered to eight,(8) families during the past week. Each family expresses appreciative feelings of thankfulness as they accepted the fresh produce and fruits.
It's healthy eating at it's best!!!!!
Again, thanks to Katie at ChangeX for the assistance and support needed to make this project possible.

Hello To All:
We are ready to get going with our community project. We have collected face masks , gloves and other PPE that will be needed to serve our community. Several community leaders have requested to join as volunteers.
Hopefully, next week the Governor of our state will open more segments of the community. The restrictions will continue to be ten people or less in a gathering until the end of the month.
I wish to THANK Changex for funding and the opportunity to serve the disabled people in our community.

Hello To Each Member;
It seems like we are sitting still right now but we continue to make progress. I meet with a local gardener this week that is willing to enter into a contractual agreement to raise veggies for us this spring and summer. Will keep you posted.
Thanks Juanita

Goal : Community volunteers will make weekly food purchases at local farmer's markets, food vendors and supermarkets. Food baskets will be distributed to elderly, homebound and disabled persons at least weekly. Baskets will contain fresh produce, fruits and other perishables for persons residing in western portion of Halifax County. This will increase access to healthier food choices for persons that lacks resources and transportation.
