Proven ideas and funding for your community

As part of its commitment to supporting communities where it has infrastructure presence, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a $175,000 AWS InCommunities Fund. The goal was to inspire impactful projects that will have a positive impact across communities in Calgary and surrounding areas. Interested applicants applied for funding to launch new projects, expand existing projects or introduce one of 10 established community programs (included below) with proven positive impact in other global communities.

How it works
  • Select an idea listed below or submit your existing project and register to get your project page
  • Use your project page to complete the 30 Day Challenge
  • Submit a photo and your action plan
  • Let us know what impact you are having in your community
Who can apply
  • You live in Calgary or surrounding areas
  • You're passionate about have a positive impact where you live
  • You are an individual, an existing local group or a nonprofit organization
What you get
  • Seed funding to start your selected idea
  • Free starter resource pack, technology tools, and support to get started
  • Additional impact funding, once you report back on the social impact of your active project

    From launching your garden committee to hosting a school-wide ‘dig day’, learn how to start a school garden for education, eating, and fun.

  • Community Fridge

    Start a community fridge in your community to share good food that would otherwise go to waste.

  • FIRST LEGO League - Challenge

    Lead a hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programme in your school or community for 9-14 year olds

  • Community Composting

    Divert your community's food waste from landfill, reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions

    Lead a hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) programme in your school or community for 4-6 year olds.

  • Repair Café

    Organise a free meeting place in your community to repair things instead of throwing them away.

  • Little Free Pantry

    A grassroots movement of neighbors feeding neighbors through the creation of little free pantries.

  • Open Orchard

    Organise an Open Orchard to bring people together, provide free fruit to local residents and green our urban environments.

  • Pollinator Partnership

    Invite pollinators to your neighborhood by planting a pollinator friendly habitat in your garden, farm, school, park or just about anywhere!
