About The Michael Avery Lane Foundation
The Idea
Urban Thinkscape is an initiative of Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network (PLLAN), whose work lies at the intersection of the Conscious Cities urban planning movement and the movement to optimize early education in and out of schools. It is grounded in the science of how children learn and emerge from the research of child development experts and PLLAN founders, Drs. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, which provides a science-based framework for best practices on educating children in and outside of school.
Evaluation of Playful Learning installations has already shown measurable and significant impact on children ages 2-8. This is a proven concept. PLLAN provides training and support in creating playful learning experiences. It has partnered with organizations in Seattle, Santa Clara, Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago as well as Bangladesh, Bangalore, and Mumbai to ensure community participation and ownership.
What you can do
You can create an Urban Thinkscape in your local community by installing a Puzzle Wall at a local bus stop, Jumping Feet and a Shape Zone nearby. This will provide an opportunity for kids in your neighborhood to engage in playful learning as they go about their day.
